ALBUQUERQUE, NM
Albuquerque abbreviated as ABQ, is a city located in the state of New Mexico. It has an estimated population, as of mid-2022, of 561,008 inhabitants.
Its nicknames, The Duke City and Burque , refer to its founding in 1706 as La Villa de Alburquerque by the Spanish governor of New Mexico , Francisco Cuervo y Valdez .
Named after the then Viceroy of New Spain , the 10th Duke of Alburquerque , this was an outpost on the Camino Real , which linked Mexico City with the northernmost territories of New Spain .
At the 2020 census, it had a population of 564,559, making it the 32nd most populous city in the United States and the fourth largest in the Southwest . It is the principal city of the Albuquerque metropolitan area , which had a population of 916,528 in July 2020.
